About The Event
William Grill, author and illustrator of award winning books including Shackleton’s Journey, will
sharing his expertise in a charcoal drawing class based on his latest release, Bandoola: The Great
Elephant Rescue.
His book tells the inspiring and little known adventures of Bandoola, an elephant who manages an
epic journey in 1944 from Myanmar to northern India. Accompanied by his keeper Po Toke and war
veteran James Williams, Bandoola led a group of 53 elephants and 200 refugees to safety, escaping
from the advancing enemy army. Packed with fascinating historical details about Myanmar - its
diverse landscapes from forests to mountains, the work of timber elephants, and the impact of
World War Two.
Perfect for creative kids who love tales of adventure and celebrating the bond between humans and
animals. Suitable for ages 8-12.
