The second instalment in the popular series His Dark Materials, introduces a new character, Will, and when he and Lyra meet, both of their lives will be changed forever. This book takes you on a journey through a foreign land, with the two protagonists side by side, adventuring through uncharted territory to find the subtle knife, a weapon so powerful it can create gateways through to other worlds. The destinies of Will and Lyra are inextricably linked, two protagonists, from two separate worlds, fighting for their existence. Along this journey, we see many wild and fabulous creatures, like the armoured bears of Svalbard, and the witches of Lake Enara, led by Serafina Pekkala. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves action/adventure over the age of ten. The writer keeps things interesting by changing the focus every few chapters, giving you an insight into the rest of the world that Will and Lyra are in, and showing other key characters like Lord Asriel, Miss Coulter and John Farr.
