The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making

Catherynne M. Valente conjures up a world of book-loving Wyverns and blue Marids to which the determined and cunning September is led by the Green wind. Once left to her own devices, the resourceful twelve-year-old finds her way to the Marquess, an unpredictable ruler of the land who closely resembles September herself. This book is unlike any other ‘fairy story’ as alongside the wonder of the adventure, there are darker, mysterious undertones which add a layer of depth and intrigue to the story. The imagery and characters crafted by Valente are incredibly vivid, so much so that the reader will find themselves waiting for their own journey to fairyland. I cannot stress enough how much I love this book, September has become one of my personal idols and even as time goes on, I refer back to the descriptions and stories for inspiration. It is thrilling to follow the story of such a strong, young character and her unique companions. I believe everyone should read this book, regardless of age, especially those who have enjoyed Alice in Wonderland or Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
